I have long wondered about gender inequity in our workplace and have tried to reason with lot of my friends to find the root cause.

One friend suggested that there is only so any jobs are allowed for women (like there is  a quota), and considering their competitive nature it might create more inequity. I tend to rationalize this in my head and disagree. What if the leader was a women? Did we just increase the quota? Last time I checked we are hired on our knowledge, skills and abilities. And if law is there to support us, then why is there inequity.

Basis of this inequity is in an emotion. It could be the perception on men and women alike? Hiring managers need to leave preconceived notions out of the hiring puzzle and objectively look at the applicants and see how each resource fits the job.

Lot of the hiring is objective, but where do perceptions misalign?  Let's review graduation rates in computer science for women versus men. Data shows, while more women are attending college in last 40 years, fewer are graduating with computer science degrees.

So the problem has to be solved at multiple levels. Every women has caliber for computer science. Coding is like writing and is a learned behavior. Question is where do you start.

Women in their mid-career can transition using vocational programs. For experimentation, it is good to take a low cost option. But make sure that  you connect with faculty you are taking the course with. Coding is a lot like writing and once you get yourself in tune with it, you will fall in love with creating amazing products. Keep in mind for you find a support network. It is a team sport.

There is a lot of awareness in the air regarding this subject, so finding support should not be a big hassle.

Let's hope people are hired on their abilities and the gender inequity is non existent.
